New Studies in the Civilisation of Ifriqiya
This book of collected papers includes the proceedings of a study day organised
by the Tunisian Beit El Hikma Academy of Science, Literature and Art on 2
February 2018 to present new research work on the civilisation of Ifriqiya. This
comprises studies by Arab and Islamic civilisation specialist academics who have
carried out in-depth research on the role of jurisprudence in Islam (fiqh) and
formal legal opinions (fatawas) in legislation, everyday rite, and literary and Sufi
matters. They thus disassembled the authority of the sacred, the building blocks
of cultural identity and the component parts of the social fabric, uncovering the
ideology underpinning the semantic field and the various types of
institutionalisation of education in Ifriqiya.
Their innovative contribution lies in adopting sociological and anthropological
methods and using interactive, psychological and historical approaches. This
stresses the knowledge content of the book, particularly for people interested in
the place of the civilisation of Ifriqiya within the framework of world civilisation.
