General Assembly for the Election of a new President at Beit al-Hikma

Professor Abdelmajid Charfi replaces Professor Hichem Djaït

Tuesday 15 December 2015 is a red-letter day in the history of the Tunisian Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts Beit al-Hikma.

Breaking with the tradition of appointments imposed by the political authorities – which prevailed before 14 January 2011 – the first free election was organized according to a statutory constitution, within conditions of exemplary transparency at the seat of the Academy.

Only the professors of the different departments, members of the Academy, were empowered to vote.

There were several candidates for the position: the retiring President, Professor Hichem Djaït, the former Minister of Culture Bechir Ben Slama, Professor Abdelmajid Charfi and Professor Karem Boubaker.

The results gave the palm to Professor Abdelmajid Charfi, Emeritus Professor and former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of Tunis, specialist in Islamic Thought and Civilization.

According to custom, Professor Charfi will take up his duties after the publication of this appointment in the Official Archives of the Tunisian Republic.
